CDL Physical FAQ
What will I get?
Generally, you will leave with a Medical Examiner’s Certificate and examination form. Please keep in mind-whether or not you are certified and for how long you will be certified may depend on your health. Medical cards will typically be good for anywhere from 3 months to two years.
What about submitting the information to the appropriate government agency?
We submit your Federal Certification online immediately after the exam to the Federal Government. You will be required to take the form to the local State Motor Vehicle department.
How much will it cost?
The physical is $30- this includes the completed form and the Driver’s card.
What happens during the appointment?
You will need to answer approximately 40 medical questions on the form. This is about your medical history and required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. We will then do a head to toe physical exam. This will include the basic test for hearing and eyes. We will also do a test of your urine. This is NOT a drug test. We only do drug testing if required by the carrier/employer and is charged separately from the CDL exam.
Do I need a sleep test? What if I’m overweight?
We use a questionnaire to screen for sleep apnea, and if your screening is positive, we are legally obligated not to certify until you have had a sleep study. If you are overweight, snore loudly, sometimes stop breathing when you sleep or are excessively sleepy during the day; it is in your best health to have a sleep study before your CDL exam.
I have pre-existing medical issues-Will that be a problem?
If you have any health problems that could prevent you from driving safely or that could result in sudden incapacitation, federal regulation may require additional testing or treatment before certification. Many times, we may be able to give a 3-month certification giving you time to address the condition or concern. The follow-up exam is included in the cost of the original exam of $35 and at that time a longer certification period issued.
What should I bring?
Be sure to bring your Commercial Driver’s License and any eyewear or hearing aids that you use. Be sure to drink water the day before and at least 32 oz before your exam. Cash, check or credit card is expected at the time of service.
